The people of 45th District turned out in force today to elect David as their next state delegate! The voters responded overwhelmingly to David’s strong progressive message, our grassroots campaign of hard work fueled by hope, our dedicated Vote Strong Volunteers, and David’s commitment to using this seat to help change balance of power in Virginia.
Here are the results:
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
“I want to thank my opponent, Chris Gregerson, for a spirited competition,” said Delegate-Elect Englin. “We gave the voters a real choice in this election, and I’m honored that they have chosen me to fight for them in Richmond. Now the real work begins, and now we must work together to seize this opportunity to continue the fight for progress.”
“To the hundreds of grassroots volunteers who devoted so much of themselves to our cause, I will be forever grateful. I’m proud of Team Englin’s strong, positive grassroots campaign. You have proven that nothing can stand in the way of people willing to fight for what’s right with hope in their hearts.”
Team Englin has spent months providing technical assistance and making thousands of phone calls and door knocks for other terrific candidates, and we are thrilled to announce that David Poisson has defeated extreme right-wing Delegate Dick Black, and Dave Marsden defeated right-wing challenger Michael Golden.
Caleb helped open the Get Out The Vote Rally in Alexandria’s Market Square today by leading the assembled crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. David and Caleb joined Democratic elected officials, candidates, activists and hundreds of supporters from across Northern Virginia to welcome Tim Kaine, Leslie Byrne, and Criegh Deeds, along with Governor Mark Warner, who fired up the audience to turn out every possible vote for the entire Democratic ticket.
“Caleb has been practicing since yesterday and told me this morning that he was nervous about saying the Pledge of Allegience in front of all of those people,” said David. “He was terrific — I’m so proud of him.”
After a who’s-who of Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax Democrats got the crowd fired up for victory, Tim Kaine, Leslie Byrne, Criegh Deeds, and Governor Mark Warner took the stage. Together they drove home the need to work hard house by house, street by street, precinct by precinct to turn out every possible voter tomorrow.
“It was exciting to welcome Governor Warner home to Alexandria, and, with the help of everyone who is working so hard toward our victory tomorrow, I look forward to representing him and his family in the House of Delegates,” said David.

Team Englin knocked on hundreds of doors and made hundreds of phone calls this weekend during the first two days of the Final Four.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the strong, positive campaign we continue to run, focused on a progressive agenda of new ideas in areas like education, health care, housing, transportation, and the environment,” said David.
“While my Republican opponent is sending out mail lying about my positions on issues, we’re also getting complaints that his volunteers are knocking on doors and telling people he’s the Democratic candidate. I’m shocked and disappointed that his campaign would so dishonor the democratic process, but I know the voters will see through these deceptive tactics, and it won’t change our strong, positive approach.”
Multiple shifts of Vote Strong Volunteers fanned out across Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax to share David’s strong progressive message with voters throughout the 45th district. A contingent of Vote Strong Volunteers ventured out to the 37th district to help knock on doors for Democratic candidate David Bulova, who is battling to win the open seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Del. Chap Peterson.
“While Republicans spin lies up and down the ticket, our Vote Strong Volunteers are focused on bringing the positive message of the Democratic ticket to voters throughout the 45th district,” said Shayna.
Sunday afternoon, Team Englin hosted members of Equality Virginia, who used Campaign Central’s phone lines to make calls to members of Virginia’s GLBT community to encourage them to vote on Tuesday.
It’s not too late to join the fight! However much or little time you can contribute, we need you to help turn out votes for David and the entire Democratic ticket. Check the Campaign Calendar for more details and let Mel know when you’ll be here: volunteer@davidenglin.org or 703-549-3203.
The Washington Post today endorsed David as its choice to represent the 45th District in the Virginia House of Delegates:
“Newcomer David L. Englin (D) has run a turbocharged campaign both in the primary, where he beat a crowded field of Democrats, and since then against” his Republican opponent, who has “championed a proposal that could squeeze schools and social services by artificially holding down residential property tax assessments.” The Washington Post editorial board says that David, “Has made up in energy what he lacks in longevity. . . He has promise.”
On the eve of Team Englin’s “Final Four” push, David spent the day campaign hard across the 45th district.
The day started early, with David meeting voters at the King Street metro station, which he has been doing regularly for many months. Later, in the morning, David and other Democrats welcomed
Lt. Governor Tim Kaine to Shirlington, where Kaine impressed upon the crowd the importance of this weekend’s get out the vote efforts. Following that, David joined Delegate Brian Moran, candidate for sheriff Dana Lawhorne, and a packed house of volunteers at the Alexandria Democratic Committee headquarters to make phone calls to voters throughout Alexandria reminding them to vote on Tuesday.
“It was terrific to see so many committed volunteers of all ages and backgrounds packed into the Alexandria Democratic Committee headquarters stuffing envelopes, assembling literature, making calls, and devoting themselves to our fight for progress,” said David. “When we win on Tuesday, it will be because of these hardworking, dedicated grassroots volunteers.”
David later joined local elected officials and other community leaders to celebrate the opening of the new building for the Arlandria Health Center, which provides quality, affordable, accessible health care to many of Alexandria’s poorest families.
