While people across the 45th District — including in David’s neighborhood of Del Ray — have been hit hard by flooding caused by the recent downpours, residents of the Huntington community of Mount Vernon have been hit the hardest, forcing the evacuation of 158 homes. Today David visited the flood site and met with firefighters and county officials working to recover people’s homes, and he met with displaced families at the Red Cross shelter and assistance center that has been established at Edison High School.
“I commend the firefighters, police officers, county employees, business owners, Red Cross staff and volunteers, and all members of the community who have pitched in with great courage, skill, and professionalism to keep people safe and help get them back on their feet,” said David. “It will take many months for some of our neighbors to put their homes and their lives back together, and I am committed to doing whatever I can to help.”
Earlier in the day, Governor Kaine called David to discuss the tragedy.
“I urged the Governor and his staff to declare a state of emergency and to do whatever they can to help our people recover,” said David. “While local officials are working with great professionalism, we are also in discussions about how the state might be able to help. In the meantime, please keep the people affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.”
