ALEXANDRIA – The Virginia Partisans Gay and Lesbian Democratic Club announced last week that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.
“As a champion of the notion that every member of our community — including gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Virginians — should be equal in freedom and treated with equal dignity and respect, I appreciate this endorsement of my efforts,” said Englin, whose bill to protect equal rights in hospital visitation was the only pro-equality bill that passed the General Assembly this year.
“We’re proud of the fact that every candidate we endorsed in the general elections of 2003 and 2005 who was elected went on to vote against the Marshall-Newman amendment,” noted Tom Osborne, Treasurer of the group, referring to the constitutional amendment denying equal rights to unmarried couples, including same-sex couples. “No other group representing the LGBT community can say that — not Equality Virginia, and certainly not the Virginia Log Cabin Republicans. We’re careful about who we endorse.”
Englin was one of 24 legislators to receive the group’s endorsement.
Grassroots volunteers from every corner of the 45th District packed Campaign Central last night stuffing envelopes and making phone calls helping David to reach out to his constituents and campaigning to build a Democratic majority in the General Assembly.
The overflow crowd, which included several first-time Team Englin volunteers alongside many regulars, hailed from all across the community, including Shirlington, Belle View, Old Town, Del Ray, Hollin Hills, Beverly Hills, Parkfairfax, and Huntington.
“I’m so incredibly grateful to each of you for joining us on a beautiful evening when you could have easily been elsewhere,” said David. “When we win back the General Assembly and can deliver the kind of reasonable, progressive legislation that will bring the reality of our country closer to the beautiful ideals we profess, it will be because of the work you did to make that happen.”
Join us for Team Englin’s next Volunteer Night on Wednesday, May 23rd. Let us know you’re coming at 703-549-3203 or info@davidenglin.org.
