ALEXANDRIA – The Virginia AFL-CIO formally announced Monday that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.

“Representatives of the working men and women of Virginia overwhelmingly voted to endorse Delegate David Englin’s candidacy,” said James R. Leaman, Virginia AFL-CIO president. “He is indeed an effective voice for Virginia’s working families, and we’re proud to stand with him.”

“It’s an honor to have the support of an organization that represents working families in Virginia and across the country,” said Englin. “We wouldn’t have a middle class today, or weekends off, were it not for organized labor. I’m proud to stand with the AFL-CIO to support working men and women, fighting for basic needs like safe working conditions and decent wages and health care benefits.”

David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election. The Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

“We are in great need of leaders who will make the protection of the natural resources of the Commonwealth a top priority. Delegate David Englin is most definitely one of these leaders,” said Tyla Matteson, political chair of the Virginia Sierra Club. “We greatly value his commitment, as we continue to work for clean air, clean water, protection of green areas, and the most important fight of our time: to address global climate change.”

“I am honored by the Sierra Club’s vote of confidence in my leadership,” said Englin. “I want my son to be able to breathe clean air, drink clean water, eat the fish he catches, and grow up healthy and strong in a world free from the threat of global warming and destructive climate change. Policies that protect clean air and clean water, conserve natural resources and habitats, and promote clean, renewable energy sources are critical investments in the future health and safety of our communities and our country.”

Volunteers pack Campaign Central to re-elect David

200807281245.jpgMany thanks to all of the volunteers who packed Campaign Central shoulder-to-shoulder last night to escape the August heat and do the work necessary to propel David to victory this November and to help change the balance of power in the General Assembly.

“Wow — what an amazing turnout!” said David. “Given that it’s August and half of the area seems to be on vacation, we expected just a handful of people. I am incredibly honored and humbled that so many people believe enough in our cause to give their time and energy like this.”

The two-dozen volunteers included several long-time Team Englin stalwarts, as well as five new volunteers, including newly-minted Alexandria City Councilman Justin Wilson.

200807281245.jpgThroughout the evening, the crew stuffed thousands of envelopes and made hundreds of phone calls to every corner of the 45th District sharing David’s 200807281246.jpgrecord of strong, effective, progressive leadership, and reminding voters to turn out this November. Volunteers also made hundreds of calls into two targeted districts to help Democratic challengers pick up seats currently held by Republicans.

Team Englin hosts semi-annual cookout in the Berg

Team Englin yesterday evening hosted its semi-annual Community Cookout in Alexandria’s public housing neighborhood know as the Berg. As the record-breaking heat of the day began to subside, families came out to enjoy some food, cold drinks, music, and the company of friends. 200807281251.jpg

“This is always one of my favorite events,” said David. “I’ve gotten to know so many of these kids and their families, that it’s always fun to catch up, see how much the children have grown, and find out what’s on their parents’ minds so I can serve them better.”

Andy Rivera from the Advancement Project was on hand to provide assistance with restoration of voting rights.

“I appreciate the Advancement Project’s ongoing support for these events,” said David. “Too many members of our community — particularly in this neighborhood — are denied the right to vote because of a mistake in their past that they have already paid for. if you are convicted of a crime and have paid you debt to society, your right to vote and to participate in the democratic process should be restored automatically.”

Alexandria legislators fight to prevent disruption of tougher Mirant Plant permitting process

ALEXANDRIA – Delegate David Englin (D-45) announced today that he and other members of the City of Alexandria’s General Assembly Delegation have requested legislation to ensure that the state’s Air Pollution Control Board will be allowed to complete its work to clean up the Mirant Plant.

“We need this legislation to allow the Air Pollution Control Board to see through its work to prevent the Mirant Plant from violating clean air standards in our community,” said Englin. “If the pending bills to effectively disband the Air Pollution Control Board go into effect without allowing the Board to complete this process, it will be a major setback for our community.”

The letter to the General Assembly’s Division of Legislative Services formally requesting the legislation was signed jointly by Englin, Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49), Del. Brian Moran (D-46), and Sen. Patsy Ticer (D-30).

During the 2007 session, the General Assembly passed House Bill 3113 and Senate Bill 1403 that would consolidate the State Air Pollution Control Board, the State Water Control Board, and the Waste Management Board into one board that would significantly weaken citizen input and put the new board under tighter control of the Department of Environmental Quality. A bipartisan coalition of legislators who opposed this move successfully fought to include a “re-enactment clause” that prevents these bills from going into effect unless the General Assembly passes them again next year. The new legislation requested by the Alexandria delegation would amend these bills to ensure that pending work be completed by the existing boards before any consolidation occurs.
