Englin Took the Time

To the Editor:

For more than a year I have been concerned that, according to information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mirant has been in constant violation of its water permit since mid-summer 2003 and in violation of its water permit since early 2004. There was no information at EPA’s website to let me know whether the violations were serious or not, and so I approached several politicians asking them to please find out.

Del. David Englin took the time, and now I have my answer.

“Support David Englin”

AlexandriaGazette.jpgThe latest edition of the Alexandria Gazette Packet includes this letter to the editor:

Support David Englin

To the Editor:

I am writing to expres s my strong support for David Englin in his campaign for re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates. My two daughters attend Alexandria city public schools, as does his son, and education is a very important issue to me and my family.

I know first-hand that David is a strong supporter of public education in both Alexandria and the state of Virginia. Although he’s been in office for only one term, David has racked up a solid list of accomplishments to improve our schools. That’s why he’s been endorsed for re-election by the Virginia Education Association.

During his first-term in office, David:

* Collaborated with Governor Kaine and secured $64 million in an effort to bring Virginia teacher salaries to the national average

* Secured $2.6 million for a Strong Start early childhood education program and $4.2 million to expand the Early Reading Intervention program.

* Sponsored legislation to reduce the burden of “No Child Left Behind” on local taxpayers.

* Supported creation of a $7.2 million Higher Education Tuition Incentive Fund.

Even more remarkable is that these, and many other initiatives to improve public education in Virginia, have been largely opposed Republican legislators that control the House of Delegates.

As for David’s Republican opponent, he predictably claims to support public education. However, it’s widely known that his children attend a local private school. That speaks volumes about his true commitment to public education in Alexandria and Virginia.

On Election Day this Nov. 6, I’ll be casting my ballot to re-elect David Englin. I urge all Alexandrians that care about the education of our children to do likewise.

Volunteer Night sets the stage for the Final Four

200807161356.jpgAnother packed house of Team Englin volunteers spent Thursday evening making phone calls and preparing one last mailing to voters throughout the 45th District to share David’s record of principled, effective leadership and urge people to vote on Tuesday.

The crew included several new volunteers from Alexandria’s Bishop Ireton High School, which requires students to complete six hours of volunteer work on a political campaign. Throughout the campaign, more than a dozen Ireton students have become part of Team Englin.

200807161356.jpg“Team Englin has always been about empowering grassroots volunteers to get involved and make change,” said David. “It’s terrific to see so many young people working side-by-side with people representing the entire age spectrum of our community. I’m confident that, together, we will win this race and continue making progress in the General Assembly.”

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence endorses Del. David Englin for re-election

ALEXANDRIA - The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and its Virginia Million Mom March Chapters announced Thursday that they endorse Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election on Nov. 6. They have endorsed numerous state legislative candidates in Virginia who support common sense efforts to combat gun violence.

“The shootings at Virginia Tech on April 16 showed the need to make it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign. “The candidates we’re endorsing support common-sense gun measures to help strengthen Virginia law enforcement and make Virginia communities safer.”

“I’m proud to have the support of groups working hard to prevent gun violence in our communities,” said Englin. “I look forward to our continued work together against efforts to weaken reasonable gun safety laws.”

As the nation’s largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign, working with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters, is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

Connection Newspapers endorses Del. David Englin for re-election

Connection Newspapers, which includes the Alexandria Gazette Packet, the Mount Vernon Gazette, and the Arlington Connection, today announced its editorial page endorsement of Del. David Englin for re-election on Nov. 6:

Englin for Delegate in the 45th

One-term incumbent Del. David Englin “is working hard to fill some of the void” left in the 45th District by the retirement of Marian Van Landingham, who represented the district for 24 years.

“Englin is energetic and devoted full time to the district. His priorities, views and vision match his district well, including a focus on affordable housing, the environment, education and health care. He has also been an advocate for his constituents, for example helping residents of Huntington hard hit by flooding in their interactions with FEMA. He continues to pursue innovative ideas to lower health care and prescription costs. Englin shows an excellent capacity for growth, and with time, might come close to filling Van Landingham’s shoes.”
