The current editions of the Alexandria Times and the Alexandria Gazette Packet include this letter to the editor from David explaining that he has asked his Republican opponent to join him in pledging only to place campaign signs in the yards and windows of supporters and not litter them throughout our community along public rights of way and in other public spaces.
“I am committed to this pledge, regardless of what my Republican opponent decides,” said David. “The recent primary and City Council campaigns overwhelmed our community with political signs during one of the most beautiful times of year and placed an unfortunate burden on local roads maintenance officials. Asking voters to show their support with signs in their yards and businesses and keeping our public medians clear is something simple we can do avoid contributing to the problem over the coming months.”
Do you part to help Team Englin honor this pledge! Send a note to info@davidenglin.org with your name and address, or call us at 703-549-3203, and we will drop off a sign for your yard or window.
The I-95/395 HOT Lanes Project is moving forward quickly, with Fall 2009 projected as the contract signing between VDOT and the Fluor-Transurban project team. If the proposed redesign of the Shirlington Rotary is approved, I am deeply concerned that the resulting traffic and pollution will undermine quality of life in several historic neighborhoods in the 45th District, especially Parkfairfax, Fairlington, and Shirlington. The VDOT-Fluor-Transurban project team has a legal and ethical responsibility to demonstrate with sufficient data that the proposed changes to the Shirlington Rotary will not cause more harm than good to our community.
At my request, the project team has engaged in several meetings since early May with Arlington and Alexandria transportation officials and me, at which we have been attempting to address these issues. While the meetings have been somewhat productive, I have yet to be convinced that there is sufficient data and analysis for the project team to stand confidently behind any assertion related to the affects of the proposed changes to the Shirlington Rotary. Therefore, barring some compelling new information, I will do everything I can to stop the Shirlington Rotary portion of the HOT Lanes project.

The Alexandria Sunrise Optimists Club welcomed David as their guest speaker at the Belle Haven Country Club this morning to give them an update on the 2009 session of the General Assembly. David briefed them on the state budget, the statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars, and other legislative issues.
“I always enjoy spending time with the Sunrise Optimists, not only because of their positive outlook, but also because I share their belief in the importance of investing in children,” said David.
After David’s prepared remarks, the group discussed issues ranging from transportation funding to the recent Alexandria City Council vote to move local elections from May to November.
Alexandria – NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia announced today that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s Nov. 3 election.
“Delegate Englin is one of our most ardent supporters in Richmond and an enthusiastic defender of reproductive freedom for all Virginians,” said Tarina Keene, Executive Director, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. “During his four years in office, Delegate Englin has actively fought against efforts to deny access and funding to women’s health services, and he has maintained a 100 percent pro-choice voting record. This year, he was the chief co-patron of the Birth Control Protection Act and he patroned the Pharmacy Refusal Notification Act requiring pharmacists to post signs warning women when they refuse to fill birth control prescriptions. It is an honor and a pleasure to endorse such a steadfast advocate of choice and women. Delegate Englin is a true choice champion.”

Grassroots volunteers from every corner of the 45th District packed Campaign Central this evening doing the neighbor-to-neighbor outreach on the phone and in the mail that will help David win re-election and help Democrats win a majority in the House of Delegates this November.
“Thank you to everyone for working so hard to make a difference for our community and our Commonwealth,” said David. “From the very beginning, Team Englin has been about empowering regular people to make change, and it’s incredibly humbling that so many years later our volunteer ranks continue to grow and to prove that together we can make a difference.”
David’s Republican opponent formally announced her candidacy yesterday, so Team Englin needs your help now more than ever. Click here to join our grassroots army today!
