Sierra Club endorses Del. David Englin for re-election

sierra_clubAlexandria - The Sierra Club announced Wednesday that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s Nov. 3 election.

“Delegate Englin has been a leader in protecting the natural resources of the Commonwealth of Virginia today and for future generations,” said Tyla Matteson, political chair of the Sierra Club’s Virginia chapter.  “We urge all Sierra Club members to support Delegate Englin’s reelection.”

“Sierra Club activists in our community have been important to our successful grassroots efforts to rein in pollution from from the Mirant Plant in Old Town, and they have been incredibly helpful in lobbying on behalf of a wide range of conservation, green energy, and green economy initiatives,” said Englin.  “It’s an honor to have the Sierra Club’s support so we can continue working on these issues together.”

Englin has been a leader on environmental issues in the General Assembly and has authored and sponsored several pieces of legislation to address the growing threat of climate change.  Last year, Englin played a key role in the successful fight to defeat an effort to dismantle the citizen environmental boards, empowering the City of Alexandria’s efforts to rein in pollution from the Mirant power plant.  This year, Englin was the author and chief patron of the Renewable Energy Job Creation Tax Credit, which House Republicans killed with a pocket veto in committee.

The Sierra Club is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.  Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself.

Delegate David Englin is currently serving his second term in the Virginia House of Delegates, where he represents the 45th District, which includes parts of the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Arlington County.  He faces a Republican challenger in the upcoming Nov. 3 election.
