David thanks Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for work on restoring voting rights

Delta Sigma Theta SororityDavid dropped by the One Love Community Festival at George Washington Middle School yesterday, where he stopped in to thank the women of the the Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for their work on voter registration and voting rights restoration.

“More than 300,000 Virginians, more than half of whom are African American, cannot vote because of prior felony convictions, even though they’ve otherwise served their time,” noted David.  “Only Virginia and Kentucky impose these life sentences, and it’s something I remain committed to changing in Virginia.”

Englin named to campaign finance transparency Honor Roll

Richmond - The Virginia Public Access Project, the non-partisan, non-profit organization devoted to campaign finance transparency in Virginia, Thursday named Del. David Englin (D-45) to it’s Honor Roll.  A member of VPAP’s Sunshine Caucus, Englin makes a point to voluntary file campaign finance reports electronically so VPAP may easily integrate the data into its campaign financy transparency database.

“Transparency is the overarching principle of Virginia’s campaign finance system, and electronic filing is a simple step candidates can take to make sure constituents can see who contributes what and hold elected leaders accountable,” said Englin, who has successfully passed legislation to strengthen Virginia’s campaign finance disclosure laws.

Virginia’s farmers endorse Englin for re-election

agpacAlexandria - The political action committee of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, AgPAC, announced Friday that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.

“It may seem incongruous to some that a Delegate from an urban area like the 45th District, which has no farms, would be endorsed by Virginia’s farmers,” said Englin.  “However, Virginia’s farmers give us locally grown, organic, and sustainable food — food sold each week at farmers markets throughout our community — that is healthier, better for our environment, and contributes to our quality of life.  I gladly accept this endorsement as a terrific example of the mutual vested interest between urban and rural communities.”

Englin commends Arlington County Board on HOT Lanes lawsuit

Richmond – Delegate David Englin (D-45), whose district is at the heart of the proposed I-395/95 HOT Lanes project, made the following statement today in response to the lawsuit Arlington County filed today against the United States Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and the Commonwealth of Virginia:

The Arlington County Board has taken an important step toward protecting quality of life in Parkfairfax, Fairlington, Shirlington, and the surrounding neighborhoods, and I encourage citizens and local officials to support their effort.

While the hundreds of Alexandrians and Arlingtonians who have mobilized in opposition to the project as currently proposed do recognize the legitimate need for transportation improvements along I-395/95, we must continue to demand that nothing move forward until a full and comprehensive environmental assessment provides the data necessary to ensure that no harm will come to our community as a result.

Good data and analysis drive good public policy, and it is my sincere hope that this lawsuit ultimately will push the various stakeholders to do the analysis necessary to deliver a win-win solution. In my view — a view I believe will be validated by analysis resulting from this legal action — a win-win solution will be based on transit that moves people and does not simply increase the volume of cars moving from Stafford and Prince William into the District of Columbia.

Again, I congratulate the Arlington County Board on its leadership, and I encourage the citizens of the 45th District to continue to support their efforts.
