Education Committee refers Englin textbook legislation to Board of Education for action

Richmond - At the request of Delegate David Englin (D-45), the House Committee on Education voted unanimously today to refer his Virginia Textbook Accountability Act to the Virginia Board of Education with a letter requesting the Board work with him to develop a policy to ensure accurate textbooks in Virginia classrooms.  Englin released the following statement:

“I appreciate the Education Committee sending this clear message of bipartisan support for our efforts to fix the broken process that allowed egregiously inaccurate textbooks in Virginia classrooms.  The Board of Education’s recent positive first steps toward restoring Virginia’s credibility are very much aligned with the solution I have outlined in the Virginia Textbook Accountability Act.  Therefore, since the Board can potentially put a new process in place before July 1 when legislation would go into effect, it’s only appropriate to give the Board an opportunity to fix the problem.  I look forward to working with them to hold publishers accountable and to ensure the accuracy of all textbooks used in Virginia’s schools.”

The Virginia Board of Education provides details of the action it approved Jan. 13 on its website here:  http://www.doe.virginia.gov/news/news_releases/2011/jan13.shtml
