Alexandria – The Virginia Education Association, Virginia’s largest teachers’ union, announced this week that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.
“Delegate Englin has been a champion of public education, and Virginia teachers are proud to stand with him,” said Gina Miller, President, Education Association of Alexandria. “Our community needs him fighting on behalf of our children and our schools in Richmond.”
“As the parents of a child in an Alexandria public school, Shayna and I know first-hand how important teachers are to making sure Virginia’s children receive a world-class education, so I’m deeply honored to have the support of the VEA and the teachers they represent in our community,” said Englin. “This endorsement is also meaningful to me because my late mother was a public school teacher and a lifelong member of the National Education Association.”
A stalwart advocate for our children, Englin has helped defeat Republican plans to restructure funding for public education, exposing how it would force communities either to raise real estate taxes or lower the quality of our schools. (See video of Englin’s remarks here: http://tinyurl.com/l3b9nz)
“Education is the very foundation of our democracy and our economy,” said Englin. “I will continue to fight for quality preschool for all children, better teacher pay, smaller classes, and laws empowering parents to be involved, and I will keep standing up to unfunded testing mandates that waste taxpayer money without improving education.”
The endorsement came from the VEA’s political action committee, which is the union’s political arm and is funded entirely by voluntary contributions of VEA members.
