Englin calls on Cuccinelli to investigate whether McDonnell’s commission broke Virginia’s open-meetings law

Alexandria - Delegate David Englin (D-45) yesterday sent a letter to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli urging him to investigate whether Gov. Robert F. McDonnell’s Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring broke the law by conducting taxpayer-funded meetings behind closed doors without public notice.  A Washington Post article published Saturday revealed that workgroups of the Commission began holding meetings about two months ago without public notice and without informing or inviting Democrats serving on the Commission.

“When a Commission charged with increasing government transparency and accountability conducts its business in secret and in possible violation of the law, these are serious allegations,” said Englin.  “The Attorney General should be the chief watchdog on behalf of taxpayers and citizens, and I urge him to investigate these allegations to ensure the bipartisan transparency and accountability that Virginians expect and deserve.”

The Washington Post article includes analysis from numerous open-government experts and advocates, including the executive director of the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council, stating their belief that the McDonnell Administration and the Commission have broken the law.
