Control of the Virginia Senate all comes down to the work we do over the next several days, so now is the time to step up and do your part! Senator George Lincoln Barker is a terrific Democrat whose district now includes six precincts in the west end of Alexandria. We need all hands on deck at Team Englin’s upcoming phonebanks for George:
Tuesday, Nov. 1, 6p.m. – 9 p.m., 1505 Wayne St, Alexandria
Thursday, Nov. 3, 6p.m. – 9 p.m., 1505 Wayne St, Alexandria
Look, we know you’d rather stuff envelopes than make phone calls. Who wouldn’t? But there’s no better way to get people out to vote than a personal call from a neighbor in the community. Plus, these are calls to people who already support George and our other Democratic candidates, so they’re fun calls to make! We’ll give you a phone, a script, and numbers to call, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know. This race could literally determine whether Democrats or Republicans control the Senate, so now is not the time to sit on the sidelines.

David joined the T.C. Williams High School “Zombie Band” and thousands of costumed children, parents, and pets for the annual Del Ray Halloween Parade yesterday. Families from throughout Alexandria enjoyed music and games at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center following the parade. As part of this annual community tradition, David served as a judge to help determine which Del Ray businesses would be recognized for the best Halloween decorations.
“Congratulations to the Del Ray Business Association and the many volunteers and sponsors for another successful Del Ray Halloween Parade,” said David. “This is the kind of wonderful community spirit that makes Alexandria such an special place to live.”

Alexandria - Mothers and Others of Virginia announced today that it endorses Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.
“If conservative Republicans take control of the Virginia Senate that day, our efforts to bring equal rights to our LGBTQ family and friends will be severely hampered,” said Joyce Scher, chair and co-founder of Mothers and Others of Virginia. “We must not stand on the sidelines. We must instead lend our voices and share our resources — both time and money — in support of candidates who favor equality for LGBTQ Virginians.”
“As staunch advocate of equal right for all people, I’m proud to have the support of this grassroots group of mothers and other family and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Virginians,” said Englin. “I hope all fair-minded Virginians embrace their message and get engaged in the fight for equality and fairness.”
Protecting and strengthen Virginia’s education system has been a top priority throughout my service in the General Assembly. As the parent of a child in public school, I have seen the great work of our teachers and the challenges they face firsthand, and I offer three ways the General Assembly could improve education in Virginia.
First, we must repeal the existing law that forces schools to remain closed each summer until after Labor Day. Proponents of the law believe it protects Virginia’s tourism industry. However, other tourist-dependent states, like Florida, do fine without such restrictions, and giving communities power over their own school calendars would give them the flexibility to best meet the needs of their students.
The current law does allow for weather-related waivers, which is why more than half of the state’s 132 school divisions can already set their own calendar. Unfortunately, that has created an inequity where the half denied that flexibility – including Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax – is home to a higher proportion of children who are more challenging to educate because they are poor, at-risk, or non-native English speakers.

Alexandria - LGBT Democrats of Virginia and Equality Virginia announced this week that they endorse Del. David Englin (D-45) for re-election to the House of Delegates in this year’s November election.
“We are proud to count Delegate David Englin as one of our strongest allies in the Virginia General Assembly. From the moment David entered public service, he has been a passionate champion for equality and has always stood by the LGBT community,” said Tiffany Joslyn, president of the LGBT Democrats of Virginia. “That passion and dedication has never wavered. For these reasons, we strongly endorse David’s re-election this November and look forward to working with him for many years to come.”
“As an unabashed advocate of equal rights for all people, it’s an honor to have the support of these premier organizations in Virginia working to ensure that every Virginian is treated with equal dignity and respect,” said Englin. “Our nation was founded on the idea that each person has a self-evident, equal, and inalienable right to human freedom, and I’m proud to do my part to move that vision closer to reality.”
